Belco Community Credit Union Supports Young Entrepreneurs
Harrisburg, PA (01/23/18) – Belco Community Credit Union continues to support young entrepreneurs through the Business INCubation program at Big Spring High School. Belco recently assisted a student start-up business, Red, White and You, to realize their goal of purchasing inventory for the business endeavor.
Red, White and You is a business created by junior and senior students enrolled in the Business INCubation program. The student entrepreneurs developed a small business idea of selling patriotic t-shirts based on their strong passion for supporting active duty and veteran military personnel. A major component of their business plan was to offer apparel that was made in the United States. They took that effort a step further by forming a relationship and having the t-shirts printed by a local veteran-owned company, Gray Water Ops. The business plan also includes donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of every shirt to an organization helping veterans.
The struggle for the students was generating interest in their product and plan without having apparel samples to show prospective customers. That’s where Belco Community Credit Union came in. The students pitched their idea and business concept to Belco management seeking a small donation to purchase inventory. Following the pitch program Belco invested a small monetary donation as “seed money” to be used to purchase inventory and help the business move forward. Since the purchase of inventory, the students have showcased and sold their t-shirts at two school related events, with plans to advance sales at events outside the school setting.
Belco has a student-run branch, the Bulldog Branch, which is located in Big Spring High School. Belco staff has been working with the Business INCubation program since its inception more than three years ago. Belco staff serve on the advisory committee, act as mentors and coaches for students and participate in the “pitch program” held once students have developed a business idea.
Red, White and You student entrepreneurs are wearing samples of the t-shirts sold by the student run business. Students include (l to r): Johnny Brookes, Job Pelete, Jordan Smith, and Hannah Washington.
