Harrisburg, PA (May 22, 2018) – Belco Community Credit Union recently awarded five scholarships to help student member-owners meet their higher education goals. Belco has been awarding scholarships to members for more than 24 years. This is possible in part because of Elton “Miller” Peterman, a true visionary as one of Belco’s founding fathers. In his honor, Belco renamed its scholarship program in 2004 to the Elton “Miller” Peterman Scholarship program.

Belco annually awards five $1,000 scholarships to members based on their educational accomplishments, activities and an essay they submit on a chosen topic related to credit unions and personal finance. The scholarship winners were chosen in March and honored at Belco’s annual meeting held on April 21, 2018. Belco received nearly 130 applications for this year’s awards.

The following 2018 Elton “Miller” Peterman scholarships winners have each received $1,000:

Nathan D. Smyers, son of David and Michele Smyers of Carlisle, PA. Smyers attends Carlisle High School and plans to major in Pre-Medicine at Juniata College in Huntingdon, PA.

Jenna L. Bittinger, daughter of Mark and Christine Bittinger of Lewisberry, PA. Bittinger attends Northern York County High School and plans to major in Spanish Education at Houghton College, Houghton, NY.

Nicholas C. Dintino, son of Mark and Jackie Dintino of Westminster, MD. Dintino attends St. Paul’s School for Boys and plans to major in Pre-Medicine at Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ.

Taryana Peterson of Harrisburg, PA, is continuing her college education at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA and is studying to become a pediatrician.

Meghan E. Freed of York, PA, is continuing her college education at DeSales University in Center Valley, PA and is studying to become a physician assistant.

“Belco is proud to recognize the achievements of deserving students and support their continued education and training, and offers congratulations to each of our 2018 scholarship winners” said Sam Glesner, Senior Vice President of Belco Community Credit Union.

Belco can also help students with their student loan needs. The credit union offers private student loans to help pay for all qualified educational expenses, including tuition, books, room and board, computers, etc. Belco also offers consolidation loans for those members who have finished their studies and wish to simplify multiple student loans into one convenient payment.
